A 144 sq ft room (typical bedroom) needs a 42–48" fan; a 225 sq ft living room needs 52–56"; over 400 sq ft needs 60" or multiple fans. How to read: Find your room's square footage. Match to a blade span from the third column. The next three columns tell you the mount type or downrod length for common ceiling heights.
Adjustments: When to Size Up
Vaulted / Sloped Ceiling
Add ~6" of downrod per foot of slope. A 12 ft ceiling with 4/12 pitch (18°) needs 48" downrod + angled adapter.
Open Floor Plan
For spaces over 400 sq ft or with 8+ ft ceiling height, consider two 56" fans instead of one 72".
Low Ceiling (Under 8 ft)
Flush-mount only. The blades must hang at 7+ feet off the floor for safety clearance.

What Is Blade Span?
Blade span (or blade diameter) is the full tip-to-tip distance across the circle the fan blades form when running. A 52" ceiling fan has blades that together span 52 inches. This is the number to match to your room. The ENERGY STAR ceiling fan sizing guide maps room area to blade span because airflow coverage scales with blade length.

How do I use this ceiling fan size chart?
Find your room's square footage in the second column. Look across to see the recommended blade span and downrod length for 8, 9, and 10 ft ceilings. For vaulted ceilings, add ~6" of downrod per foot of slope beyond the table values.
What size ceiling fan for a 12×12 room?
A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft. The ENERGY STAR table recommends 44"–48" blade span. For an 8 ft ceiling, use flush-mount; for 9 ft, a 12" downrod; for 10 ft, a 18"–24" downrod.
What size ceiling fan for a large living room?
A typical large living room is 225–400 sq ft. Use a 56"–60" fan on a 24"–36" downrod. For great rooms over 400 sq ft or with vaulted ceilings, use a 60"–72" fan or two 56" fans evenly spaced.
What is a flush-mount ceiling fan?
A flush-mount fan (also called hugger) mounts directly to the ceiling with no downrod. They're designed for 8 ft or lower ceilings where a downrod would put the blades too close to head height.
