Per ENERGY STAR Key Product Criteria (effective June 15, 2018):

Hugger ceiling fan: "a ceiling fan for which the lowest point on the fan blades is less than or equal to 10 inches from the ceiling"
Standard ceiling fan: "lowest point on fan blades is greater than 10 inches from the ceiling"

ENERGY STAR hugger efficiency requirements (more lenient than standard fans):

D × 36": × 0.31×D + 36.84 cfm/W (vs 0.72×D + 41.93 for standard)
36" < D < 78": × 1.75×D ? 15 cfm/W (vs 2.63×D ? 26.83 for standard)

Per Hunter's 2026 catalog: 27 of 194 with-lights SKUs are tagged "Low Profile" and 3 are "Ultra Low Profile". Hunter's hugger fans range 36"—52" × most common is 44".

Trade-off: hugger fans deliver slightly less airflow than downrod fans because the motor is closer to the ceiling and air circulation at the very top of the room isn't as efficient. For typical bedrooms with 8 ft ceilings, the difference is negligible.
