Use the chart below to find your tankless GPM by household size and climate zone. A 4-person household in moderate climate needs 7-9 GPM (gas) or 4-5 GPM (electric). Cold climates need 20-30% more GPM. All recommendations follow the ENERGY STAR and AHRI standards. Use our free calculator for a custom recommendation in 60 seconds.

How to read: Find your household row. Look across to your climate column for the recommended GPM. BTU assumes 65°F rise (moderate climate) — cold climates need 20-30% more BTU. Electric requires 240V service and high-amp breakers.
Adjustments: When to Size Up
Cold Climate Inlet
For groundwater below 45°F, +25% on GPM. A 7 GPM moderate-climate unit becomes 9 GPM in Minnesota.
Multiple Simultaneous Showers
If 3+ people shower at the same time, add 2.0 GPM per extra shower to peak demand.
Soaking Tubs
A standard 60-gal tub fills in 8-10 min at 6 GPM. A 80-gal soaking tub needs 2 × 8 GPM or staged fill.

What Is GPM?
GPM (gallons per minute) is the flow rate a tankless water heater can deliver at a given temperature rise. A 9 GPM unit can deliver 9 gallons of heated water per minute at its rated ΔT (typically 35°F or 65°F). When the simultaneous fixture demand exceeds GPM, the unit throttles back output temperature — that's why undersized tankless units deliver lukewarm showers when two showers run at once.
Tankless Sizing FAQ
How do I use this tankless water heater size chart?
Find your household size in the left column. Look across to your climate zone for the recommended GPM. The last two columns show matching gas BTU and electric kW capacities. Cold climates need 20-30% more GPM than moderate.
What size tankless for a family of 4?
A family of 4 in moderate climate needs 7-9 GPM gas (180-199k BTU) or 4-5 GPM electric (24-27 kW). In cold climates, plan for 8-10 GPM gas or 5-7 GPM electric.
What is GPM for tankless water heater?
GPM (gallons per minute) is the flow rate a tankless can deliver at a given temperature rise. A 9 GPM unit can deliver 9 gallons per minute at its rated ΔT. Match GPM to your simultaneous fixture demand + 1 GPM safety buffer.
Tank or tankless water heater?
Tank: lower upfront ($800-1,500), 10-15 year lifespan, simple install. Tankless: higher upfront ($1,500-3,500), 20+ year lifespan, endless hot water, 22-34% more efficient.
