How do I choose the right ceiling fan size?
Use the ENERGY STAR blade span table. Measure your room's length and width, multiply to get square footage, then match to a blade span. Under 75 sq ft: 29"–36". 75–144 sq ft: 42"–44". 144–225 sq ft: 48"–52". 225–400 sq ft: 56"–60". 400+ sq ft: 60"–72" or multiple fans. Then pick a downrod to keep blades 7–8 ft off the floor. What size ceiling fan for a bedroom?
A typical bedroom (100–144 sq ft) needs a 44"–48" ceiling fan. For an 8 ft ceiling, use a flush-mount (hugger); for 9 ft, a 12" downrod. Smaller bedrooms under 100 sq ft can use a 36"–42" fan. The key is matching blade span to room area and putting the blades 7–8 ft off the floor for safety and airflow efficiency.
Flush-mount or downrod fan?
Flush-mount (hugger) fans mount directly to the ceiling with no downrod. They're the right pick for 8 ft ceilings because a downrod would hang the blades too low. For 9 ft and above, a downrod is better — it puts the blades at the 7–8 ft target and prevents the fan from "churning air" along the ceiling. Vaulted ceilings always need a downrod (and angled adapter) regardless of height.
How much does a ceiling fan cost to run?
A standard 52" ceiling fan uses 50–80 watts on high speed and 10–15 watts on low. At the US national average of $0.16/kWh, running a fan 12 hours a day costs about $30–$50 per year. ENERGY STAR fans are 20% more efficient and save about $8–10/year per fan.
How long does a ceiling fan last?
Standard ceiling fans last 10–15 years; premium models (with sealed bearings and quality motors) last 15–25 years. The biggest lifespan factor is motor quality and blade balance. A wobbly fan usually has a loose blade, a bent blade, or an unbalanced motor. Look for grinding or humming sounds as motor failure signs.
Can I install a ceiling fan where a light fixture is?
Usually yes, but check three things: (1) the existing electrical box must be fan-rated (labeled "suitable for fan support" or stamped with a weight rating of 50+ lbs); (2) the wiring must include a neutral wire; (3) the switch box may need rewiring to separate fan and light controls. A standard ceiling light electrical box is not strong enough to support a fan's weight and vibration.
