Heat Pump vs Standard Electric Water Heater: Which Should You Buy?

Both of these are electric storage-tank water heaters, but they make hot water in completely different ways. A standard electric unit uses resistance heating elements — simple and cheap, but it turns electricity into heat at roughly 1:1. A heat pump (hybrid) water heater instead moves heat from the surrounding air into the water, like a refrigerator running in reverse, making it two to three times more efficient.

That efficiency (UEF around 3.0-4.0 versus 0.90-0.95) slashes operating cost, but a heat pump costs more upfront, needs roughly 700-1,000 cubic feet of air around it, and produces cool, dehumidified exhaust. Generous rebates and tax credits often close much of the price gap.
